This Privacy Policy sets forth Atlanta Metropolitan State College (“AMSC”) policy with respect to the gathering and dissemination of information we obtain from you on the web site for Atlanta Metropolitan State College located at atlm.edu (“Site”).

Atlanta Metropolitan State College is committed to maintaining the privacy and accuracy of your personal information. We do not actively share personal information gathered from the Site. However, some information collected from the Site may be subject to the Georgia Open Records Act ("ORA"). This means that while we do not actively share information, in some cases we may be compelled by law to release information gathered from the Site. Georgia public universities also comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act ("FERPA"), which generally prohibits (with some exceptions) the release of education records without student permission. Google Analytics
This website uses Google Analytics to help analyze how users use the site. The tool uses "cookies," which are text files placed on your computer, to collect standard Internet log information and visitor behavior information in an anonymous form. The information generated by the cookie about your use of the website (including IP address) is transmitted to Google. This information is then used to evaluate visitors' use of the website and to compile statistical reports on website activity for Atlanta Metropolitan State College.

We will never (and will not allow any third party to) use the statistical analytics tool to track or to collect any Personally Identifiable Information ("PII") of visitors to our site. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. Neither we nor Google will link, or seek to link, an IP address with the identity of a computer user. Lawful Basis for Collecting and Processing Personal Data
Atlanta Metropolitan State College is an institute of higher education involved in education, research, and community development. In order for Atlanta Metropolitan State College to educate its students, both in class and online, engage in research, and provide community services, it is essential and necessary for AMSC to exercise its lawful basis, to collect, process, use, and/or maintain the personal data of its students, employees, applicants, research subjects, visitors, and others involved in its educational, research, and community programs. These activities include, without limitation, admission, registration, delivery of classroom, online, and study abroad education, grades, communications, employment, applied research, development, program analysis for improvements, and records retention.

The lawful basis for the collection and processing of personal data by Atlanta Metropolitan State College falls under the following categories: 

  • Processing is necessary for the purposes of the legitimate interests pursued by Atlanta Metropolitan State College or by a third party in providing education, employment, research and development, and/or community programs
  • Processing is necessary for the performance of a contract to which the data subject (any person whose personal data is being collected, held or processed) is party or in order to take steps at the request of the data subject prior to entering into a contract
  • Processing is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation to which Atlanta Metropolitan State College is subject

Types of Personal Data Collected

Atlanta Metropolitan State College receives personal data and special categories of sensitive personal data from multiple sources. Most often, Atlanta Metropolitan State College gets this data directly from the data subject or under the direction of the data subject who has provided it to a third party (for example, application for undergraduate admission to Atlanta Metropolitan State College through use of a common application).  Examples of data that AMSC may need to collect in connection with the lawful basis are: name, email address, IP address, physical/mailing address and other location identifiers, phone number, photos, as well as some sensitive data obtained with prior consent.

Security of Personal Data
All personal data and special categories of sensitive personal data collected or processed by Atlanta Metropolitan State College must comply with University System of Georgia’s (“USG”) Cybersecurity Plan, as authorized by the Board of Regents Policy Manual Section 10.4 Cybersecurity: https://www.usg.edu/policies. Anyone suspecting that his or her sensitive personal data has been exposed to unauthorized access, report your suspicion to abuse@atlm.edu. Otherwise, questions concerning more general data privacy can be sent to dataprivacy@atlm.edu.

Atlanta Metropolitan State College takes seriously its duty to protect the personal data it collects or processes. In addition to AMSC’s overall data protection program, Atlanta Metropolitan State College must make sure it complies with federal, state, and other applicable regulations.

In support of data protection, AMSC, appropriately secures personal data, is transparent about the personal data it collects or processes and the uses it makes of any personal data, and keeps tracks of all uses and disclosures it makes of personal data.

Georgia Open Records Act
As a state college, AMSC is subject to the provisions of the Georgia Open Records Act. Except for those records that are exempt from disclosure under the ORA, the ORA provides that all citizens are entitled to view the records of state agencies on request and to make copies for a fee. The ORA requires that Atlanta Metropolitan State College produce public documents within three business days. For more information on AMSC’s ORA compliance, please visit the Open Records Act page on the Human Resources website.

Atlanta Metropolitan State College keeps the data it collects for the time periods specified in the University System of Georgia Records Retention Schedules.
