Research Area:
Epigenetic Modifications Induced by Viral Infections
Research Description:
My research involves determining mechanisms that Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated Herpes Virus (KSHV; also known as HHV-8) uses to maintain persistent infection in host cells. Epigenetic changes in both the host cells and viral genome will shed light on the control of gene expression during infection. Studies involve: 1) defining the mechanisms of epigenomic deregulation/modulation of immune responses against KSHV, 2) defining the mechanisms by which changes in host and KSHV gene expression through functionally relevant epigenomic modifications attenuate or inhibit oral KSHV pathogenicity and decrease infection, and 3) defining the mechanisms by which drugs and therapies affect host and KSHV epigenomic modifications.
