Veterans FAQ's

What is the first thing I need to do to get my GI Bill benefits started?

You must be completely registered for classes. Once you are registered for class(es), you need to visit the Veterans Resource Center in building 600, room 115, and notify the School Certifying Official that you will use your VA benefits for payment of tuition and fees by filling out the Veterans Enrollment Form. Veterans Enrollment Form

What document do I need to turn in?

New students, you will need to submit a copy of your DD214, Veterans Enrollment Form, and Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to the Veterans Resource Office in Building 600, Room 115. Returning students only need to submit the Veterans Enrollment Form

When should I start the process If I am going to start school this year?

You should align the process with the college's early registration opportunity. Typically, you can start the certification process as early as 120 prior to the first day of class. If you wait to certify your attendance one to two weeks prior to class start date will delay the receipt of any benefits that you may be qualified to receive.

When will I receive my entitlements?

Payments for benefits vary. Books - payments for books for students who receive Chapter 33 benefits are issued first and take 10- 20 days after the School Certifying Official (SCO) sends certification to the VA

Stipends - are usually issued on the first day of the month following the first day of class. After that, stipends are paid on the 1st day of the month. Students who register late may experience longer delays if they wait to register close to the beginning of the semester. Preregistration is the ideal strategy.

Tuition and fees - are paid directly to the school for Chapter 33, Chapter 31, and Tuition Assistance. All other students will need to make payments for their tuition and fees by the school's deadline. Students whose tuition is covered by the VA do not need to be concerned with any debt notifications if they have been certified for the semester. EACH SEMESTER all students using the VA benefits MUST check with the SCO in the Veterans Resource Center once they register for class(es).

To what education benefits am I entitled?

The type of benefits depends on the category of service. You can visit Vets.gov, ebenefits.va.gov, or va.gov for detailed information. The Veteran's Resource Center can also assist you in determining your benefits. Note: if you separate from the military prior to January 01, 2013, you would have to use any VA educational entitlements 15 years after your release date. Service members who separate after January 01, 2013, fall under the Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act (Forever GI Bill), eliminating the time to use educational entitlements. Soldiers who claim at least 10% disability are eligible for the Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31) educational benefits

How can I use my parent's entitlement to pay for my classes?

The service member has the option to transfer their unused educational benefits to their immediate family members (Spouses or Children). Use the portal in vets.gov or ebenefits.va.gov. Select the education tab and follow the instructions and prompts.
