Hours of Operation
Monday - Thursday (8:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.)
Friday (8:30 a.m. - 5:15 p.m.)
Saturday (10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.)

 

The Office of Testing Services at Atlanta Metropolitan State College (AMSC) is located on the 2nd floor of the Academic Building 500 (Room 217). The COMPASS Exam, ESL COMPASS Placement Exam, Remote COMPASS testing, standardized testing (SAT, ACT, LSAT,MPRE, CLEP & TEAS) ,Consortium and online proctoring are administered by the Office of Testing Services. The Office of Testing Services at AMSC provides the following services:

 

COMPASS Exam

COMPASS is a computer-adaptive college placement test that is untimed. The three-part Exam (Math, Reading, and Writing) generally takes a minimum of two and a half hours to complete; however, any one part of the Exam may take up to 90 minutes. Photo identification (with recent photo) is required to take the COMPASS Exam.

 

Students with SAT or ACT scores should submit those scores to the Admissions Office before scheduling to take the COMPASS Exam. Documentation of minimum SAT (Math 400/Verbal & Critical Reading 430) or ACT (17) scores might exempt students from the COMPASS Exam.

 

Your performance on this Exam will determine your ability or inability to take college level courses.
The passing scores on the COMPASS Exam are:

  • Math-37
  • Reading-74
  • English- 60

You may retest if you are within a 5 point range of the passing score. Retesting is permitted only once and only within two weeks of the original Exam. An additional $20 fee is required for the retest.

ESL COMPASS Placement Exam


If you have been given the permission to take the ESL (English as a Second Language) COMPASS Exam, it is a computer-adaptive college placement test that is untimed. The five-part Exam (Math, Listening, Reading, Grammar and Writing) generally takes a minimum of three hours to complete; however, any one part of the Exam may take up to 90 minutes. Photo identification (with recent photo) is required to take the COMPASS Exam.


Students who are non-native speakers of English, must take the ESL COMPASS Placement Exam unless

  • They have transferable ENGL 1101 transfer credit
  • They have a COM score of 550 paper or 79 iBT or above
  • They have a TOEFL score of 550 paper or 79 iBT or above

Your performance on this Exam will determine your ability or inability to take college level courses.
The passing scores on the ESL COMPASS Placement Exam are:

  • Math-37
  • Listening-89
  • Reading-95
  • Grammar-95
  • Writing- 6 (written sample)

No retest allowed for the written sample. However, you may retest if you are within a 5 point range of the passing score for Math, Listening, Reading & Grammar. Retesting is permitted only once and only within two weeks of the original Exam. An additional $20 fee is required for the retest.

Examinees are welcome to come by the Office of Testing Services & Academic Support Center (3rd floor of the Library) to receive test preparation materials prior to taking the COMPASS or ESL COMPASS Exam.

Remote COMPASS Testing


AMSC students who live outside the commuting distance of Atlanta Metropolitan State College should contact the Office of Testing Services to arrange off-campus testing.


If you are a non-AMSC student you must schedule your appointment by calling (404) 756-4783.  Walk-ins are not recommended. You must report to our test site 15 minutes prior to your Exam. Be prepared to present a printed copy of your payment, registration/confirmation letter & Photo Identification (with recent photo) on Exam day. Also, please request for a decal prior to taking your Exam. For payment, Master Card, Visa, Discover, check, cash or money order is accepted. Payments must be made at the cashier window located on the first floor of the Library (Testing fees are non-refundable). Non-AMSC examinees must contact their home institution after completing the COMPASS Exam.

Consortium

The Office of Testing Services proctors several tests for various institutions, businesses, state and government agencies. Please contact the Office of Testing Services at (404) 756-4783 for all inquiries concerning Consortium Exams.

 

Online Testing

If AMSC online instructors wish to have their Exams proctored, instructors will need to contact the Office of Testing Services. Notification must be given to the Office of Testing Services at least 14 business days in advance and be provided with specific instructions and sufficient copies of their Exam prior to test administration. Parking Instructions

Please park in the Green Lot. Parking is not allowed in the reserved, numbered or visitor parking spaces. The Office of Testing Services will provide you a decal.
